~*a flashback *~

Marie & Dan circa 1998
Oh how young we look. I thought I would share since Katy posted a flashback of her own...she went back to high school, but that's a LONG LONG way back for me and my dh. I keep this picture in a frame in our family room. I still love it.

I got this recipe from Jilly who has some really great recipes. Use what you have or add what you like, remove what you don't. This recipe is easy, quick and DELISH!!! I have made it a couple of times and shared it with a friend and it has become one of their favorites. You will love this, especially in the summer months when standing over the stove in the summer is not top on your list. Try it and let me know what you think.

~* soapbox warning *~

I finally received the overtime check I was owed from the job from hell for hours that I worked last year!!! I had to go through my state's department of labor and of course my former employer lied like a rug about hours that he knew I worked and when I was in the office, etc. It was not about the money for me, my husband provides me a very good life, and as a matter of fact I am donating this money to our local police department to help them purchase another K9 officer, it was totally the principle, which of course I was proven to be in the RIGHT!!! I absolutely HATE liars and these were some of the worst! They lied about times when they knew I was there before my regular start time because they called me at my extension and said "I knew you would be there!" then told the labor investigator I was never in the office before 9am. They lied about a meeting that went late into the night and I stayed to clean up and even did the dishes so that they (husband and wife owners) didn't have to bring dirty dishes home, but I still had to be back at the office early the next morning and said the meeting was only 2 hours long! The nerve. But in the end I prevailed and I won. David beat Goliath! The police will appreciate the donation towards their goal and I will know that all my hard work in proving I was in the right is going to a good just cause!!! Ok, off the soapbox now! Enjoy the rest of your day. I will be back with an awesome recipe!

~* a rally *~

Went to a rally today for my husband's company. They are getting ramped up for contract negotiations.

Here is me with the good Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
And my DH with him and Officer Adkins of our local police department who supports his union, and a representative from Rosa DeLauro's office.

It was a good morning, but very hot and humid. Lots of union brothers and sisters were there.

~* last day *~

This is the last day of recording for my son's band in our basement! Whew!
As much as I love him and I think having a hobby (job?) of music is so much better then doing nothing and running the streets, it has been very..... LOUD at our house!!!
A day this week I took these pictures of the band for their website (MySpace?) and that day was not as loud for as long. They have some upcoming shows they want to play at and they need to have some music recorded on their site, I guess, and since Matthew owns the recording equipment....guess where they had to record? Yup, here!
I guess the style of their music is called "Christian Hardcore" and so it is especially LOUD! Did I say it was LOUD? Oh, by the way, it is LOUD!!! Ok, enough complaining, they are here, I know where he is, what he is doing, and they are being productive!!! AND LOUD! Next week should be a little more quiet and practice can be at someone else's house! Thank goodness.

~* my everyday dishes *~

Linda at Behind My Red Door posted last month a challenge to show your everyday dishes and tell a little bit about them...here is the link- http://behindmyreddoor.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-everyday-dishes.html. I know this was a month ago, but I have had a few things going on and actually I had checked this on my bloglines and then got so busy I forgot, but I wanted to post the challenge now.

These are my everyday dishes and I love them. When Dan and I were first together I was just getting into my "country" decorating and I was in the all too popular "goose" country style. He got me a few sets of those dishes and I used them and loved them because they were from my sweetheart. However, a few years ago our family with all the wives and cousins was too large and I did not have enough dishes to set the table for everyone so I started to look for a new pattern. I decided on the Pfaltzgraff Yorktowne pattern. I was able to get more than enough plates, cups, saucers, bowls and accessories to set a beautiful table, as well as giving Dan a new item for his shopping list. He has since brought home several accessories from his business trips and added to my collection.
And as any good Pfaltzgraff collector I have collector friends who like to share their wealth and talents with me. This cup with my name was created by a friend I met on a Yorktowne forum I created.
As you can see I now have plenty of dishes and I love this pattern so much that Dan and I are going to make the doors of my cupboards open with glass or something.
I have been blessed with a husband who understands that I NEED all the accessories to go along with the dishes. I have other pieces that go well with this pattern as well such at those xtra large latte cups in the back there.
And some pieces are completely for decoration! This little tea set is strictly to make me smile. This too was a gift from another collector and friend from my forum! I have some pieces such as lamps and soap dispensers in other rooms. I am grateful that I am able to have a pattern that fits well in my country/prim home.
Share your everyday dishes and tell why you like them.

~* a blog award *~

Wendy at http://thecozyyellowhouse.blogspot.com/ has awarded me my very first blog award!!! I am so excited. I can hardly believe that anyone thought my blog was exciting enough for an award. It truly is just about me and my life, the good and the bad and although I struggle with what I will and won't share in blogland...I enjoy blogging and have "met" a lot of nice people through this hobby! So thanks Wendy!!! Now, here are the rules:
1. You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserving of this award for their creativity, design, interesting material, and also contribute to the blogging community, no matter what language.
2. Each award has to have the name of the author and a link to his/her blog to be visited by everyone.
3. Each award winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that presented her/him with the award.
4. Please include a link to the “Arte Y Pico” blog so that everyone will know where the award came from.
5. To show these rules.
So here is who I chose:
Whew, that was really hard, although I love all the blogs I visit daily, I had a hard time choosing only 5!

~* cruisin' *~

My sweetie and I went on a "cruise to nowhere" last night with the local police union. It was really nice, the weather was great, the water was calm and smooth and we had a great time. I love our police department. They are some great people, and I have a lot of respect for the public safety officers who serve and protect the public! Thanks for a great time!!!

~* welcome summer *~

Every evening sky, an invitation
To trace the patterned stars
And early in July, a celebration
For freedom that is ours
And I notice You
In children’s games
In those who watch them from the shade
Every drop of sun is full of fun and wonder
You are summer
*
So summer is finally here.... now if the weather would just act like it. Thunderstorms all over the place, cooler than normal temperatures, lots and lots of rain..you might think it was still spring!!! Let's go summer!!!

~* i like tea pots *~

Here is some of my tea pots. I have a few more, like one for Christmas and one for when I do Chinese food, but these are the favorites. I have had others, but these have lasted all the changes to my decorating styles and changes. 3of them match my Pfaltzgraff dishes (ok, I know one of those is a coffee pot), the navy one you use loose tea leaves with, and the heart one is the most used. They are out in display in my kitchen on the shelf that hubby and I made. I think this was one of the first pieces of furniture we made together. I love it. It reminds me of how well we work together!
I have had other tea pots, but I am very particular about them. I don't like the cutesy ones, you know like themed ones like a house shaped tea pot with mice or a carousel one... this is what I like, simple and plain. It goes with me...my style. So there you have it.

~* he passed *~

Ok, so my baby boy is a licensed driver now. On one hand I can hardly believe he is old enough to drive, on the other I am sooooo glad I am done getting kids through their driver's test!!! Boys and girls drive differently and learn to drive differently. Both of my kids did not get their license until they were 17. One by choice, this one by parental advisement (and permission!) But it is a right of passage for teenagers and he has it now! Another milestone!
They grow up far too fast, it really isn't fair!

~* workin' up a sweat *~

I cannot tell you how much I hate having my picture taken, but here it is. This is the day I told you all about. The day I was working for Beautification Committee planting flowers at City Hall in 100 degree temperatures! Yes, for our web site they want all sites to have pictures and this was it. Could they take a picture when I first got there, when I started on the first pot, or before I had worked up such a sweat I was wet and red??? No, this was the last of the 9 xtra large flower pots that I was finishing up. So there you have it. This is what I do for my city!

~* what I'm workin' on Wednesday *~

So this is what I am working on. I am quickly approaching my 350th post, and I am going to have a giveaway. One of my jar pincushions. But first I must make enough to have on hand to give one away. I have cut out the fabric, gathered buttons, ruffle and ric rac and gotten my jars. So that is what I have been working on today between loads of laundry, dishes, gardening and a Beautification meeting this afternoon. So go visit Leslie and see what she is working on and if you have a project going on today and want to share, link on her blog!

~* last day of school *~

Today was my "baby's" last day of school. It was a long tough year. Lots of changes, lots of switching of classes, lots of Dan and I going to the school and making them do right for our child. I am glad the year is over...we all need a rest. Next year will be Matthew's last year of school. I can hardly believe that!
But for today we are just happy that this year is over and that we all survived! Now for some summer fun!!!

~* happy Father's Day *~

Happy Father's Day sweetie! I hope you have a nice, relaxing day!

You are a great husband and father, and even an excellent uncle!
You are a great provider and you make sure we have everything we need and want to make us happy!
You are the love of my life and I am so glad you came into my life when you did. Being your wife has been the happiest thing that I have ever done, next to being a mom!
I hope you enjoy the GPS I got you! I love you!

~* a little thrifty *~

Stopped at the thrift store today and picked up a couple cute items. The soup cup I will use on my desk. I like to use them instead of boxes or plastic for storing items on the desk and they do look much nicer. The iron holders will go outside with ball jars on shepherd hooks and I will put citronella candles in them. It adds a nice glow around the patio as well as helping to keep the mosquitoes away. The pitcher (oh I have a weakness for cute pitchers like this) I can use for utensils or maybe to hold my curling irons. I have a basket but it is not in good shape and I have been looking for something else to use. The chicken feeder is brand new, and of course I could not resist the snowman, although I will probably replace the jar with a plan one during the summer and fall months but I want to use it for peanut M&Ms. And I just love the little spoon rest. All this for less than $10!

~* what's bloomin' *~

More heat and humidity are on the way for today, with some possible storms. Great. I have corn and pumpkin plants that need to go in the garden. So I thought I would show you what is blooming in my gardens today.
Rose campion
Daisy
Veronica
My first rose from my climbing rose bushes!!!
Dianthus
Black hollyhock
Happy Returns Daylilly
Pink evening primrose
Yellow evening primrose
Red blanket flower.

So, Dan had to take a quick business trip this weekend and he will be home tomorrow just in time for Father's Day. I don't know what our plans will be, I guess it will depend on the weather, and here in New England it can change in an instant, but we may just cook out and relax.
Big news on the pool front. The repairs are supposed to happen next week! I will keep you all posted! I can hardly wait to get water in it and use it in this heat!!!
Have a great weekend!

~it's hottttttttt!!!*~

It is so hot out. Today is the 4th day in a heat wave. 100 degree temps! Can't go out in this heat, although yesterday I worked outside all day planting for Beautification! I thought I fried my brain! But over the weekend we didn't do much. I stayed inside in the a/c and made this dishcloth! They are still working on our pool so there is still no water in it. Can you believe the timing!? We are supposed to get a storm tonight and hopefully it will bring a little cool down with it. Until then, I am just trying to stay cool. Have a great day and stay cool if you can!

~* Cornus kousa "Satomi" *~

My popsicle pink dogwood is in full bloom and more beautiful than ever!
It was a Mother's Day gift a few years back from my husband and kids!
It takes a few years to mature before the flowers actually get this pink so I am really enjoying the beauty of it this year! I was beginning to think it was a dud!
But as you can clearly see, they are truly pink now!
