~*our new family member*~

This little cutie came to us yesterday. I have been wanting a small dog for some time and I have been waiting to find just the right one. Bella is, after all, one especially spoiled dog. So I was wanting a small lapdog that would not compete with Bella, but would be an addition to the family and hopefully fit in with our family.
Meet Gigi. Her given name was Ginger, but I am into short quick names so I shortened it to 2 sylabals and now it flows much quicker.
She and Bella are getting to know each other and she is quickly becoming a love! These pictures just don't really show how small she is. She is sitting under my coffee table here.
Tomorrow I do my inteview with the local TV station for my K9 challenge. Ok, I am a little nervous about that....I will let you know how that comes out.
Have a great day!

Here are some new goodies I got at the Thrift store earlier this week. $3 for the whole lot. Can't beat that! I love this little candle holder and I have a little bowl that matches.
A few more mugs that go with my pattern.

~*Whatcha workin on Wednesday*~

So it's time for Leslie's "Whatcha workin on Wednesday"! Today I am actually working on a project I borrowed from the queen of do it yourself, Leslie! I saw this little night light on her blog and then I saw this little chicken feeder at a thrift store a few weeks back and I knew exactly what I was going to do. I already had a little lamp and once I saw it all put together on her blog I knew what I wanted to do.
I had about a bag and a half of cranberries in the freeze that were freezer burned that I really didn't want to throw away so I am drying them in the dehydrator and they will be perfect surrounding the light in the bottom of the feeder.
So, this post is dedicated to Leslie who inspires all of us to do a little more, especially on Wednesdays, and to make a little more effort when we can make it ourselves instead of buying it....
I will post a picture of my finished light when it is all put together.
Thanks Leslie!!!
Have a great day!

Ron Palillo was here in our city to premiere a new movie he is in. A bunch of us were at a cocktail get together at the place the movie was going to be playing and he was there. He stopped by our table and chatted for a bit. It was neat to talk to him. I do remember him on "Welcome Back". He is a nice guy. I couldn't stay for the movie, but it looks good, there were movies stills. Thought I would share my photo of the evening with you all.
Have a great day!

~*Whatcha Workin' on Wednesday*~

Time for Leslie's "Whatcha Workin' on Wednesday" again. So, what am I working on? Well, my K9 project, of course. I am making phone calls today to big companies, dog food, pet supplies, etc. I also have to write my donation request letter to be used for letter/email requests. This really is such an important thing to me. I did call the paper (well, Dan did!!!) and request that they put another little piece in and add my contact info and other ways people can make money to donate. All of which was in my original piece and was cut!!! They said they may run another little bit, and I added another picture, since I think it catches people's eye and then they read what the piece says. Speaking of pictures, this is one of my favorites from the day I took. Isn't it cute how they are looking at each other? Ok, I am off to start my phone calls.
Have a great day!!!

~*I won I won I won*~

Remember this giveaway??? Well, I won!!! I just adore these hearts and now that I got them they are a perfect match to the lamp shade to my little tin night light in my hallway. They look like they were made to go here!!! I love them. Thanks Celene. They are a perfect addition to my home.
I have been so busy lately, sorry I haven't been able to stop by and visit all your blogs and read and leave a comment, but as soon as my schedule slows down (yeah, right!) I will get to each of you!
Hope you are all having a great day!!!

~*well here it is- my K9 piece*~

Here is my op-ed piece, minus 300 or so words. Talk about editorial privilage! It is really missing a lot of the emotion and that really changed some of the context of the piece, but I have already received a call from someone who runs a local community access show who wants me to come on his show for my cause, so I guess I will get more publicity....and that is a good thing, since in the end, the cause is what the piece is all about!!!
I really want to see this challenge raise enough money for not only a new dog, but I would love to raise enough for all the supplies as well as the training.
Keep your fingers crossed.

~*living in my old stone house*~

I am really a homebody, I like to be home. And I really love my home. Is it perfect? No. It still needs a lot of work. But I love to be here. Bats and all. Yeah, sometimes we have bats. They like to hang out in between the stone and the walls. I don't know how they get in there, but they do and then sometimes they get inside the house. But then my husband or my son catches them for me and I am good again. My husband always loved stone houses and so when we saw this house he really wanted to see it. I wasn't as thrilled with it from the outside as he was, but when we went to the showing and I saw the inside we both just loved this house. It has so much character and charm and there are just no other houses like this one. I didn't want a cookie cutter house. I wanted an older house, something unique and different and I definately got it with this house.
Adding our "cobblestone" driveway was one of the first jobs we undertook. I picked the colors of the blocks out to match the house and I am so glad we went this route. Besides looking like it was done at the same time as the house was built, this driveway is dry as a bone within hours of a snowfall in the winter after Dan snowblows when the sun hits it. And everyone knows where we live as "the stone house"!
Yes, I love living in my old stone house.

~*my K9 project*~

I am still working on my K9 project. Doing some research. Making some posters. Contacting some local businesses. I am really hoping to raise a lot of money for this truly important aspect of my local police department. As soon as my piece comes out in the newspaper I will link it...but until then, here is a picture of me and the K9 officers (both human and dog!).

~*pay it forward*~

An awesome fellow blogger, Mary had this great idea to Pay it Forward. This is such a fantastic idea, I took the challenge! This is how it works:
I will send a gift (of my choosing!) to the first 3 people who leave a comment on my blog requesting to join this "PIF" exchange
YOU must make the same pledge on your blog
So, if you want a goodie from me & you are willing to do the same on your blog, let me know! I will need your snail mail address to send you your gift - we can email each other off blog for that.

~*a birthday weekend *~

My nephew had his 6th birthday this weekend. He is big into space and science. We got him a couple erector sets. I think his dad will like to play with them!!!
On Saturday I hurt my back while trying to open the pool pump filter to clean it. Ouch, it still hurts today, but not too bad, which is good because as usual I have cleaning to do after the weekend. August already, back to school month. Wow, where did the summer go? I really do love fall, but I hate to see summer come to an end. I have a few meetings to go to this week and I am still waiting for an opinion piece I wrote to be published in my local was supposed to come out 2 weeks ago....argh! I have a few businesses and the local police (who the piece is about) waiting for the piece! I hate when people are unreliable! Ok, enough of a vent.... I have to get to work on the kitchen. I have a meeting tonight and so I have to make sure I have all my housework done before I leave.

~* the trade*~

Just for the record Manny, it is YOU who doesn't deserve "the sox"!!! Good luck on your new team, and may they have fun dealing with your "mood swings"!

~* the pickle recipe *~

So many of you asked for the pickle recipe from yesterday's post. I posted it last year, but I will post it again with my adaptations. It originally came from Cooking Light magazine, August 2007.
Easy Refrigerator Pickles
6 cups thinly sliced cucumbers (about 2 pounds) I use a Mandolin to slice and put it on the #3 slice thickness.
2 cups thinly sliced onions
1 1/2 cup white vinegar I double this and the sugar, salt and seeds so I have a lot of extra pickle juice and use this to pickle hot peppers after the pickles are done, I certainly cannot pickle them together or the pickles will be too hot.
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt I use a coarse sea salt
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon celery seeds
1/2 teaspoon turmeric I have substituted saffron here, I used it the 1st time I made them since I had no turmeric, then used turmeric the 2nd and did not like them nearly as much so I went back to saffron.
Also, I have found at a restaurant supply store pickling spice that has all the seeds and a few other spices that work nicely in place of each of the seeds. I added 2 teaspoons to represent each seed ingredient doubled.
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 cloves garlic thinly sliced Again, I doubled this and I finely chopped the garlic.
1. Place 3 cups cucumber in a medium glass bowl; top with 1 cup onion. Repeat procedure with the remaining 3 cups cucumber and 1 cup onion.
2. Combine vinegar and remaining ingredients in a small saucepan; stir well. Bring to a boil, cook 1 minute. Pour over cucumber mixture; let cool. Cover and chill at least 3 days. Yield 7 cups.
Pickles may remain in the refrigerator for up to one month.
Again, I vary the recipe here by adding all the cucumbers and sliced onion to a 1 gallon glass jar all at once. Over the course of the 4 days I gently stir them so they get mixed. Also, they do last longer than a month if your family won't eat them all in that time. After the 4 days I transfer the finished pickles to smaller jars and even give some away to really special people (you all would get a jar from me!!!) I use the leftover pickle juice to pickle hot pepper by simply thinly slicing them and adding them to the jar, waiting 4 days.
This recipe is so simple and even if you have never pickled before it takes really no skill. I love to put them on burgers and sandwiches. If you make them let me know how them come out.
Have a great day!!!
