~*Hello bloggy friends*~

Hey y'all! I know it's been so long since I've blogged. So much has been happening in my life- but for the last year we have been renovating an 1850 house- top to bottom! I can tell you it's been an experience!!! I hope we are nearing the end but as anyone who has renovated an old house knows- nothing goes smoothly! Here is a sneak peak at the house. I'll do more photos as time permits, but know that each day is bringing me closer to being in this sweet old house. I have some great decorating plans for this house as well. See ya' soon!

~* my updated prim kitchen*~

This is my kitchen when we moved in here in September 2003. I knew when I bought this house that my kitchen was going to be the heart of my house, but that it was going to take a lot of work to get it where I wanted.
In 2010 I painted my cabinets again (I had painted them a colonial blue) this country white. I liked it well enough but to be honest, it was a pain to keep clean, especially around the knobs. Hand prints were always showing up on the doors.
So a few years ago I painted my hutch this brick red (it's actual name is paprika) and I loved it a lot. I had gone from white to red and felt it really fit in well with my decor.
So I decided that I would paint my cabinets the same red. I really love the way it came out. And we replaced the ceiling fixture as well and I love that so much more than the other brass one. It had a paint treatment to make the brass look like a green/blue patina. It was a gorgeous light, just not primitive enough looking for me.
So now it is done. (I only wish I could remove that ugly linoleum floor, but that is just not a project I want to tackle) And I really couldn't be happier with the results.

Have a great day!

`* more pennies *~

So I have been making a few penny rugs lately. A couple penny rug mats, some window sill scarfs, some bookmarks.... I've just been looking for reasons to make them. Then this idea came to me. I'd like to redo my mousepad (which had a photo in it) with a customized one.

And this was what I came up with. I actually love it! And since there is not a lot of pennies piled on top on one another it is pretty smooth. (I wish the photos would rotate, they are right on my computer!) I think I will make this a theme in my home office.

Have a great day!

~* Snow day *~

So we've had a couple snow days lately. I don't mind, really, I only work 2 mornings a week and so I don't miss a lot of work if I can't make it. But I do worry about my DH and his hour long drive to and from work. So far he was been lucky and made the trip in the snow with no events.
But these days do give me a chance to get some crafts done. I had a penny rug runner that had some damage on the ends, so I took the time yesterday to take it apart and re-work it. I cut it down, replaced the hearts in a new pattern, and added the tongues all the way around. I love the way it turned out and love it on my noodle board.
I also took the opportunity to make some penny rug bookmarks. I like getting my Christmas crafts/gifts done early in the year so I am sure to get everyone done in time. These were easy and quick and I love how they turned out.
Since I fill the gift bags with all sorts of little homemade gifts, these will be a perfect addition to the bags.

I have a few more penny rug crafts that I will be working on... Just love the look of them.

Have a great day!

~* an awesome homemade gift*~

So I asked my dad to make me this planter box for my centerpiece. I got the directions online and emailed them to him (they are not good finding things online, but do email!).
I gave it a quick dressing for fall. I loved it so much and it means to much to me that my dad made it for me. I've wanted one for some time and was just too busy to make one myself, so I thought this would be a good project for my dad. He is getting older and without planned events, he just sits around watching TV or eating. I want him to keep his mind sharp and keep him doing stuff.
So now it is dressed up for Christmas! I love it! I am so happy with the way it turned out and how awesome it looks on my dining room table.
I can't wait for my parents to come over for Christmas breakfast so that my dad can see how special his homemade gift to me is.
I made most of my gifts this year. It was really fun and affordable to make gifts for all my family members. It made me really feel the real meaning behind gift giving.
Have a great day!

~* it's beginnin' to look a lot like Christmas*~

So my bid as a City Councilor is over. I lost my last campaign. Truthfully I am glad it is over. It is sooooo much work, no one really knows how much, and it is thankless!!! No one tells you you are doing a good job, just what you are doing wrong.
So I started making my Christmas gifts this year last Spring. I am almost finished, except these embroidered hand towels I am finishing up.  I love the way they are coming out and am making a few extras for those last minute events we go to where we need a gift. They are so cute and I know I especially love a homemade gift.
So along with the other gifts I have made, I have these for my family and maybe some lucky person who invites me over for a holiday party!
Have a great day!

~* It's been so long...*~

I know it's been a looooong time since I posted ANYTHING. Since being elected to the City Council my life has been turned upside down. I have been so extremely busy, I can't even begin to tell you! Also I have had some personal issues that thankfully I was able to work through!!!
I have been doing some home, renovations, tho and working in the gardens. Just basic stuff.
Hope to get back to blogging regularly soon.
Have a great day!

~*and the finished countertop...*~

And here is the finished counter top. I love it. So much in fact that I am hesitant to use it to cut on. I know it is a cutting board counter top, but. IT IS BEAUTIFUL! And I don't want to put a scratch on it!!! I am so pleased with the way it came out. After we brought it home, I got out the beeswax and buffed it and it wIas just so gorgeous!!!!
I have stopped by Home Depot and looked at the "faux tin" tiles for the back splash and as soon as I decide on the other counter top and sink I can finish the whole process! Oh happy day!!!
Have a great day!

~* before and during my latest project*~

Since being elected to the City Council I have not really had ANY time to do any project, crafts or anything else in the house. I barely had time to decorate for the holidays! But Dan has been off for the last week and a half and we decided to do a "small" project that had been on our list. We have a small counter top next to the stove that I have wanted to replace for some time now. I have kept a large cutting board on top of the counter top and wanted to replace the entire counter top with a cutting board surface. Some time ago Dan had acquired what he thought was a sizable piece of butcher block that we would be able to use for this, but after taking off the counter we realized that it was a couple of inches too short. So we went to a few woodworking shops in our city and found one that we liked that is now cutting and finishing a bamboo cutting board counter top for me! Yea!!!

However, in the week that it will take, they need my old counter top as a template and I am left with plywood to cover the hole and all my "stuff" is left on the island. I guess that is the price I have to pay for finally have the counter top I desire!
In the end it will all be worth it and my counter will be so neat and I will not have to have an extra cutting board on the counter and I will have a neat work space! Not to mention I will finally get rid of the 1950s Formica!!!

Have a great day!!!

~* a new before and after *~

This is my spice rack before. My husband made it for me many many years ago. I love it! But it was too small for the spice jars I have and it did not hold enough of the spices I regularly use by the stove. I had been looking and looking for a spice rack I could re-do at the thrift stores for some time now. Patience is not my strongest quality!

Here you can see that I have only a few jars, and the top holds store bought ones because of the top rail.
Finally I found this one and fell in love with it. I put the one my husband made me in the pantry and filled it with the store bought jars and quickly got to work putting my beautiful spice rack and spice jars out.

Now my frequently used spices (you know the ones you buy in bulk because you use so much of them!!) and specialty salts and such are right at my fingertips as I am cooking and I don't need to go into the pantry to get them. It may seem like a small thing, but really, aren't those the things in life that make us happy!

I really love it and I am sure that it will make all my cooking so much nicer!

Have a great day!

~* some more time *~

A trip to the thrift shop recently and I found this cute clock. After a few clock re-dos I knew that it didn't matter if the mechanism worked or not, I could get a new one. So for $4.99 I took it along with a few other things, which I will show you later. I wasn't a fan of the color but I knew exactly what color I wanted to paint it to put it in my living room. With the recent hurricane and power loss I realized that I needed a battery operated clock in that room, and when I saw this cutie I knew it was a perfect fit. A few coats of paint, some distressing and a new clock mechanism and TA DA!
I am loving it!!! I am having a new shelf built to go over my TV stand and it will probably end up there, so this is a temporary spot, but I love the finished product. I have been looking for some clocks and at first I couldn't find any, now I find them when I am not even looking. I will show you the other thrift store finds soon.
Have a great day!

~* problems with blogger???*~

I have been having so much trouble with Blogger lately. Then I got a message that said my internet browser was no longer supported by Blogger. Hum, could that be the problem? I tried Google Chrome and it seems to have solved it. I couldn't even sign it to write a post or comment on blogs. It was so frustrating. I was using Internet Explorer and I don't know what happened but I could not do a thing on Blogger using it. I hope they either fix it or I will have to use Google Chrome whenever I want to blog. Anyway, I am going to try to catch up on all the blogging and commenting I have missed. Hope to visit your blogs soon!!!
Have a great day!

~* a renewed garden *~

For the last few years keeping up with our vegetable garden has been a real chore. It was a 30' square raised bed, and we had originally used all of it for planting but in the last couple years we have cut out planting corn, so a big space of it went unused. That space then became just weeds and keeping up with those weeds was difficult and at times impossible. Dan suggested we forgo doing a garden altogether, but I love being about to pick fresh tomatoes, peppers, and herbs.

So we decided instead to make the garden space more user friendly. We decided a border veggie garden would be nice and so much easier to take care of, also allowing us to plant all the veggies we do without having extra space for weeds. So we hired someone to come and re-do the whole space. He had to build the retaining wall, move the dirt to fill in the space, level out the yard, and reseed the yard with grass seed. Dan thought it would be best if we hired someone instead of doing it ourselves. He said I would made a mess with a Bobcat!!!! Hmph! I could have done it!!! Anyway, this is how it came out, and with all our veggies planted. I actually got more veggies planted and so much more neatly then before and still have a little extra room. I have a little weeding to do, but we have had nothing but rain for the last few weeks so it was all I could do to get the plants in. But now they are, so it all upkeep now. I am really happy with the outcome.
Have a great day!

~* hello prim friends *~

I changed out my wooden bowl full of rag eggs and made some rag balls. I really like the way they came out. It has been doing nothing but raining here on the East coast for the last 5-6 days and I cannot get out and finish the gardens, so I decided it was time to put the eggs away, but I really loved the look of the ragging, so I made some season free rag balls. It was nice to just sit for a bit while I ripped all those stripes of fabric.
I wrapped a pip berry garland I had around the bowl to give them a little lift since the bowl is large and even though there is 15 of them, they seem to get lost in it. I put a plastic take out container top inside the bowl under the material to give them some height as well.

Well I just got home from my birthday dinner with the family. Nothing fancy, we just went out for Chinese buffet, but it was nice to be a family for dinner. Since the kids are older, and Dan is so busy at work lately we hardly have time to have dinner as a family. I guess a birthday is as good a reason as any.

Have a great day!

~* another egg makeover *~

Another idea I borrowed from a fellow blogger. I saw this on another blog but she used rosettes. I thought this was something I could do easier than that. Of course, I didn't realize how long it was going to take me to make all those tiny yoyos. But it came out just as I have envisioned. Now, I cannot make a bunch of these at one time. It is a time consuming process, but I could do the yoyos over the course of the year and put them together right before Easter! But this one is done and sitting on the table bench on my kitchen table and it makes me happy to look at!!! Have a great day!
